Call Me Abou

Call Me Abou is an incredible emotional story of a determined village boy who happened to see himself in city life after he could no longer cope with the challenges he was facing at the village. Abou Sanneh lost his father before he was born in a village called Sami. He and his mother, Fatou Badjie, moved to Jurunku where Abou started his primary education. Fatou Badjie got married to another man at that nearby village after her first husband died. His new father, Afang Omar, was very much supportive to him and treated him equally with the other two sons. His step-brothers were called Kebba and Ba-ansu. Abou's life began to be bright at school until his step-father also passed away. He and his widowed mother went through difficult times.

There was an Old Man who was well-respected and was endowed with philosophical wisdom, who stood up to deliver them through several spiritual confrontations and allegations from the Queen mother and the Ancestor-worshipper. The Queen mother was the old woman that oversaw all the spirits and also served as the custodian of all female circumcisions. The Ancestor-worshipper was also well known through his preservation of the village heritage. Due to the challenges they received at the village, they thought it better to move to the capital city, Banjul.

Abou was unable to contain fame by the time he arrived in the city where he fell into the clutches of his city friend, Saul Rasta, who made him smoke marijuana and attempt to use other narcotic drugs. Misfortune was intrinsic to his life, he thought. He was reproached by his loving partner, Ada, because of his company with bad boys and his lack of interest in education. Abou did not seem to hear her words. Would he be able to have the courage to say 'no' and escape the life he chose for himself?
