One of the best books written about last days of Third Reich!

In the last months of World War II, a captured 18 year old German soldier volunteers to return to Germany to spy for the Americans. His terrifying five day journey through his country during its dying days reveals the human side of the Third Reich that seldom is depicted. The author, George Howe, must have served in the OSS during that war because his detailed knowledge (such as changing colors of the Gestapo's weekly 'Blacklists' or the difference in dog tags worn by regular German soldiers versus those of the SS) is phenomenal. Even if the book weren't beautifully written, it would still serve as a textbook for the last days of the Third Reich. This is a book you must read!

Gripping tale of Germans spying for the Allies

Another little-known gem of WWII literature--a memoir-cum-novel about a young german medic, captured by the Allies in early 1945, who volunteers to parachute back into Germany and gather intelligence for the Allies. He has 5 days to work his way back to the front, gathering information on troop movements, gun emplacements, and more. Based on a true story, it's a gripping read as the young German corporal stays one step ahead of the Gestapo. A great behind-the-scenes look at the Reich just before the end, through the eyes of a lowly corporal. Note: the first chapter or two is slow going, due the author's florid, overwrought prose. But once the story starts, hold on!
