Our story begins in a caf?. Unremarkable in every sense of the word, this dirty, dingy gathering place situated in the middle of the worst part of town is the last place our narrator expects to find himself. For no specific reason that he can identify, he has agreed to meet with a perfect stranger here. A variety of down-and-out folks frequent this caf?, and as our narrator slowly gets to know them, he starts to realize that these people are not what they seem; or, perhaps more to the point, his own perception of these people has not been accurate. His many meetings over the course of our story with the seemingly destitute folks in this caf? awaken in him an ability to look deeper into life, other people, and mostly himself. As his perspective evolves and matures, he begins to fall in love with life again. Many of his awakenings come through interactions with his infant son, and he gradually learns to see the world through his baby's eyes. All these experiences provoke a spiritual rebirth in our narrator and allow him to come to many important realizations about himself and his life. 'Caf? of the Heart' is a celebration of life, parenthood, family values, and the process of self-discovery.
