Martha Cabins is prideful, poor, and a religious widow. She does not have much understanding regarding imagination or dreams. She was taught as a child by her religious parents that Santa was not real. When she reaches adult age, marry, and birth children, she shares with her children the same traditions her parents told her. For years, her children are disappointed during the holiday season, but they never stop believing that Santa will one day visit them. Mr. Watson, the towns' store owner, over hears the children talking about their holiday blues one day. This Christmas would be the last Christmas that the town will allow Martha to disappoint her children with her beliefs. Martha's children will also learn a valuable lesson about judging a book and people by a cover.
