Living in the South during the post Depression era, Trudy Burton escapes her abusive parents by finding joy outside the home. Her love for the outdoors labels her a tomboy. A sequence of tragedies with family and friends causes Trudy to run. Thinking she is cursed, Trudy hops a train to begin a new life. Working her way across several states, Trudy works as a veterinary assistant and a farm hand. She meets someone who helps her realize that her past is always with her.
