The rebel army sweeps through Zia's family farm, killing her father, conscripting her brothers and kidnapping her five-year-old sister Lily, a Favored One (Down Syndrome), when Zia was in the village buying seed. Zia is the only mother Lily has ever known and Zia is desperate to rescue her from the magic-wielding Scribes and save her brothers from becoming child soldiers in the marauding army.
With only farming skills, rudimentary sword training and no clues to follow, Zia sets out to save her siblings, meeting Keniv in the next town who seeks his own lost sister. Their wish for a fabled winged horse to help them-or a whole herd-is impossible but they set out with what they do have: courage, a menagerie of different animals, one rebel Scribe, and two swords. Zia and Keniv are both determined to complete their no quest matter the cost to themselves, whether it is losing their freedom or their lives, as long as they can save those they love.
