Button Box is a family saga. It consists of a trilogy of books which cover the periods 1910 - 1930 (Button Box), 1930 - 1948 (Button Box Two), and 1948 - 1980 (Button Box Three).A prologue and a number of "interludes" throughout the trilogy serve to introduce the various family members and their stories. These portions are told in the first person by the 4th generation's Emily. The interludes also allow the reader to learn a bit about Emily's own life. Her grandmother's button box, full of "story buttons" from old family garments, is the vehicle through which each generation's tale is begun. The saga starts off when 16-year-old Marya travels to America alone to escape the turmoil which will become WWI. Sponsored by an avaricious cousin, Marya's life in the Slavic section of Cleveland, Ohio is not an easy one. She doesn't think she'd survive without her younger cousin Sophie. The two girls share most of their trials and triumphs, joys and pain. Marya enters into an arranged marriage and has a daughter, Josie. Sophie gets secretarial training and is hired by a law firm. The dramas of their lives are set against the background of the Home Front during WWI, the fight for Women's Suffrage, and the Roaring Twenties.Book Two details primarily Josie's life during the Depression and WWII, and begins the story of Josie's daughter, Becky. Book Three details Becky's life during the fifties and sixties, and also tells the story of Becky's daughter, Emily, through the seventies and into the eighties.
