Bute Creek: The lives, loves and losses of four generations touched by the Australian outback.

This literary fiction, ideal for young adult readers, is narrated by ordinary people who lead interesting lives, spanning four generations. The characters are all touched by life on a remote sheep station located in the outback of South Australia. The stories paint a picture of Bec's life, who we first meet at the age of twelve, desperately trying to find her place in the world. She is an emerging dog-whisperer, but has a major obstacle to overcome before her dreams can come true, and she can make her father proud of her. By coincidence, her dog Buddy has a disability too, but he helps her to realise her great affinity with animals and accompanies her on her journey to adulthood, becoming an unlikely hero along the way. Bec's best friend professes his love for her but she doesn't know if she can love him back. She goes on an exciting combi-van road trip down the Great Ocean Road, visits Scotland, has a mini-affair, and finds unexpected fame. Her mother comes to the outback from a tiny faraway town and her father finds himself in a dark depression after she is born but together, they visit Uluru where they are schooled in Aboriginal history. There is a gently history lesson in this story, about the legacies of white colonisation weaved throughout, by an Aboriginal girl, Irene, whose life is entwined with Bec's. We fast forward to Bec, now 70 years old, after she has outlived her husband and her closest friends. Bec enlightens readers about the fate of each character from her life and Irene's children are surprised to find out about their new status at the station. Irene's eldest son realises that he must lead the way for his brothers and sister, while he reflects on his regrets - drifting away from Bec, his family and his culture. Find out if Bec's dying wish, the survival of the station, is assured by the younger generation at Bute Creek.
