I've read quite a few of Lovesey's novels--w/his 3 different detectives--Diamond, Prince of Wales, & Sgt. Cribb, they're usually pretty good, but this is my 1st read short story collection. He's better at short stories! They're intriguing, different, surprising, & most enjoyable. The endings are gems, esp. in "The Corder Figure." Terrific!
Maitland in theater, not court, but still great!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
Anthony Maitland's good friend, Jeremy Skelton, decides to produce a restoration play by Sir John Cartwright. Another good friend, Meg Hamilton, is set to star. But before opening night, a series of mysterious warnings, ghostly voices, and accidents, has half the cast believing that the playwright's ghost is opposed to the play. When one of the actors breaks his leg and another is nearly gassed, Meg and Jeremy ask Anthony to investigate. But even Maitland is too late to prevent a murder. The question is, who want to stop the play badly enough that they are willing to kill?I really liked this book. I found it at a library sale and I was very excited because it's one I hadn't read before. I really like Woods' books and I wish they were in print. It's not the best, but it's still really good. If you can find a copy, it's worth buying.
Short stories with surprise endings
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 26 years ago
This is great little volume of 16 short stories, all which have a surprise or a twist at the end. Usually the villain gets their comeuppance or a misunderstanding leads to the hero winning the day. I recommend this book highly for those who like their reading in small batches; I just wish Lovesey would write a few more batches of stories.
