Practical and Uplifting

This book gives help and hope, no matter how discouraging one's blended family may be. It teaches which battles to fight and how to fight them with love, kindness, respect and prayer. GOBS of practical advice, and personal stories from a variety of step-parent perspectives. I'm buying another copy for a friend who will soon be a new stepmom. Two of my favorite pieces of advice were 1. Don't worry so much about trying to like your stepkids from the get-go. It may take years, so you are not a failure if that doesn't happen right away, or if they don't like you right away (or ever) and 2. Call them "borrowed kids," instead of stepkids. It takes away the connotation of distance or "less-than", as well as lessening their anxiety that you're trying to take their mother's place.
