Wayne Bartholomew aka "Rabbit" and "Bugs" changed surfing

Bug's rapid passion for surfing changed the sport. After growing up in a surfing paradise, the Gold coast of Australia, learning to ride the tube at Burleigh, he took his act to the north shore of Hawaii. There, he shook things up, taking more than his share of waves, alienating locals, but riding all the big wave spots, not just one. Before Rabbit, and his contemporaries, surfers specialized in one spot or the other, to a great extent. Rabbit pushed competition as hard as possible, pushing the transition of surfing from a recreational pastime to serious sport. While certainly one could argue other surfers, like Larry Bertlemann, were more agile in the waves, no one was more aggressive. He piggybacked a long professional career as an athlete with an administrative career as the lead executive for professional surfing. Other surfers over the years have had similar aspirations, but none succeeded like Rabbit, who basically conjured up the dream tour, a set of contests at the world's best waves. He did it all with rock-and-roll style, a surfing Mick Jagger, who despite his partying, never wound up in rehab, jail, dead, or mental hospital like many of his contemporaries. His life as been as a strong protgaonist, a strong minded man bent by his passion for surfing. It's certainly a tale worth reading.

If you've surfed before, you'll know...

If you've ever gone out at 5 in the morning to catch a wave before school. Or gone out during lunch break even if it's flat. You'll love this book. Nuff said.
