The study topic of this dissertation manuscript is the relationship between leadership styles, environmental uncertainty, and financial performance in health care. A replacement of thePatient Protection and Affordable Care Act, declared by the Republican party, would introducefinancial threats to health care organizations. The problem addressed by this study was the needto understand the relationship between leadership styles and financial performance in anuncertain environment. Considering the uncertain future of health care reform, leaders mustadjust their leadership styles as they face increasing pressure to achieve and maintain financialstability. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the leadership stylesof CEOs and financial performance (profitability). In addition, it examined the relationshipbetween environmental uncertainty and both leadership styles and profitability. The theoreticalframework for this study was guided by environmental uncertainty (state, effect, and response)and leadership styles (authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire). The research methodology ofthis study is a quantitative, correlational research method that used a Leadership StylesQuestionnaire and a Perceived Environmental Uncertainty survey to anonymously survey 131US-based CEOs of health insurance and provider organizations. Two research questions andhypotheses were tested to answer whether a relationship exists between the leadership styles ofCEOs, environmental uncertainty, and profitability. The findings determined there was nosignificant relationship found between leadership styles, perceived environmental uncertainty, and financial performance. Conflicting results between this study and prior studies signal theneed for further investigation to explain this discrepancy. It is recommended that leaders learn asmany different leadership styles as possible and be prepared to adapt to different situations.Future studies can be done using a qualitative methodology or different leadership style
