A reformed outlaw is determined to bring an elusive gange of bushwhackers to justice. But the Pinkerton bounty hunter who's brought in to help might just get him killed instead. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This mass market paperback from Leisure westerns is a very well written novel conveying a mystery with a western setting. All the characters, from the past outlaw now town sheriff, the tightly knit family members caught up in this tragedy, and the historical figures, make for a very engrossing read. The setting of the story is along the Great Divide in the Colorado Rockies, or the Colorado San Juan range. The small town of Eleanor founded in 1849 prospers at an elevation of 11,400 feet, and as Eddie Foy tells a certain Dodge City young lady, mining should be good in the area. But the main focus of this book is the bushwhacker or bushwhackers who have killed 27 people not bothering them otherwise, as nothing has been robbed. The town Sheriff Jeb Moses, a former outlaw himself, has in the past 3 years been unable to make any progress in catching the killers. So the family of the latest victim calls in a bounty hunter, Pinkerton operative, to aid in the seach effort. The feathers begin to hit the ole fan with this move. If you are looking for a conventional formulaic western this is not the one for you. But if you are looking for a new author with a good tale to tell, then again, this one might be of interest. By the way, Steven Philip Jones, Culpeper, Virginia, has only one 'p' in its spelling, not two. It is CULPEPER not CULPEPPER as you have it on page 59. Other than that small faux pas, it's an excellent book. Looking forward to your next Avalon western. Semper Fi.

A mystery that takes place in the west about a serial killer and the man who hunts him down. Great read.
