On April 9, 1947, Commissioner Happy Chandler shocked the baseball world by suspending Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher for conduct detrimental to baseball. The Dodgers' Branch Rickey signed Burt Shotton as an interim replacement.Shotton had enjoyed a solid if unspectacular playing and managerial career and little in his background indicated the success he would have in 1947. But that September, Shotton led the Dodgers to the National League pennant, and in 1949 he did it again. His success has long been overshadowed by his losses in the World Series, causing many to forget his role in establishing the Dodgers' winning tradition in the mid-1940s and 1950s.
