fantastic slice of life

So wonderful to read such this story: the humor and hardship provide a slice of life into the early 20th century, where two people in their mid 30s decided to explore one of the last frontiers in the American west. Don't pay any attention to reviews about survival; it's not as much about survival as adventure; it is a book about being on the road, albeit a dusty one with burros. Just my kind of book, I like the narration style. An entertaining read, start to finish; for entertaining Death Valley stories, it's neck-in-neck with Emmett Harder's "These Canyons Are Filled With Ghosts".

Just LOVED this wonderful book

Picked up this book almost by chance in the Death Valley Vistor Center at Furnace Creek and it is a total gem. Edna C. Price writes with great frankness and good humour of her travels with her husband Bill and their burros, in the 1930s. It has some wonderful character portraits and great anecdotes and through all of it their love and RESPECT for the country and the animals in it (as well as their burros) really shines through. Hard times but amazing tales and very well written (Mrs. Price came from an erudite and academic family and this is evident in her writing style - spare, but intelligently written). This book should be more widely available! A film would be fantastic.

Great Find!!

Found this book in the Visitors Center in Death Valley on a tour we took there while in Vegas. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down!! What a story. Makes you want to live in that simpler time and place.

The west in the mid 30's

Interesting book about a couple walking in the desert with burros in western U.S.. It tells about the problems they had an how they solved them with many different experiences. It might help if you have an interest in burros while reading this book.

This very literate, funny, and insightful book is a joy to read. Ms Price gave up a life as a nurse to a millionaire to travel Death Valley, Nevada, and the Arizona Strip behind a burro. The characters she meets come to life in this book; from the old prospectors, Mormon farmers, thieves, and people who would give their last bite of food to a couple of strangers. While the book is difficult to find, it's worth whatever you pay for it.
