This book is nothing less than a great addition to ones collection of American history! Truly a tragedy that should never happened, but did! I think this book is and excellent companion to "Ship Ablaze" another fine book on the subject. It covers other areas of this subject in great detail and you really get a different perspective.
Fascinating account of a little-known disaster

This book is short but very well written and researched. It gives very vivid accounts for the entire disaster from start to finish of an event that obviously should never have happened. It brings the reader into the event by making them become familiar with life in this country around the turn of the century. It lists the names of all crew members, many of whom had no training in how to handle a disaster at sea and tells of the imprisonment of the elderly captain. It even tells what happened to the "General Slocum" ship itself.
