Burning Hearts: Prayers for Groups

On our human journey, we have many agendas, and we tend to gather with others to address them. This book offers a collection of prayers for groups to use at ministerial gatherings like parish council meetings, bible study classes, sacramental preparation sessions and all kinds of meetings for parents, teachers, boards, project committees, etc. They work well with any group bonded by a common ground or purpose. Those who work in ministry in faith-based venues like churches, schools, hospitals, colleges and universities, seminaries, summer camps, congregations of vowed religious men and women, would benefit from these prayers. Even secular groups who use prayer at their gatherings could find this volume useful. These might include coaches of Little League, Boys and Girls Scout leaders, social and philanthropic clubs and organizations like the American Cancer Society, to mention a few. The leaders in such groups would have the advantage of a pre-packaged prayer or prayer service that would serve the purposes of that time, day and event. They provide a way of inviting God to be part of what we do and of acknowledging the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst. These prayers were written with active ministry in mind. The themes are particularly relevant to the state of the world today and the problems and challenges facing individuals and communities. These prayers deal with themes like gratitude, faithfulness, relationships, human conflict, trusting God, ministry fatigue, community, family, the gift of creation, renewal, stewardship, relying on God and more! There is a great deal of emphasis on the need for a loving response to the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed and the forgotten. The need for personal peace as well as global peace is also notably included. Most significantly, on a spiritual level, these prayers both poetically and theologically express our need for relationship with God and hopefully will serve to help develop and strengthen that relationship. Jesus's disciples referred to their burning hearts as a result of their sacred encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. Their burning hearts were manifestations of the disciples grasping for the depths of God's transformational love. By gathering as one in prayer, we too, can help to strengthen our relationship with God and set our hearts on fire!
