Burlington was established in 1833 on a difficult terrain. Every aspect of day-to-day life had to deal with the city's major bluffs, numerous streams, and large ravines. In 1889, one of Burlington's most traveled streets had two viaducts suitable for carriages, one viaduct that could only accommodate pedestrians and a ravine that cut the roadway in half. Burlington, Iowa: Bluff, Ravines and Streams is full of "then and now" pictures that depict how the city is laid out and how it coped (and is still coping) with all of these challenges.
