BOP operates three main types of segregated housing units: (1) SHUs, (2) SMUs, and (3) the ADX facility in Florence, Colorado. BOP also operates Communications Management Units (CMU), where conditions of confinement are similar to general population and inmates are allowed to congregate outside their cells for up to 16 hours per day. For information about CMUs see appendix II. According to BOP policy, all three types of segregated housing units have the same purpose, which is to separate inmates from the general inmate population to protect the safety, security, and orderly operation of BOP facilities, and to protect the public.
