Bunkhouse Ramblings is a collection of cowboy poetry and short stories full of horses and cows and the people who handle them. The author assures the reader that all writings are the truth or based on the truth or outside the edge of the truth. However all individuals and events described are real or imaginary. Duane spent a good share of his early life on horseback and in the field where he received an up-close education in stock handling and raising crops. He has been a rancher, a college student, a soldier, a college instructor and a manager of rural electric cooperatives. He has always been close to grass-roots ranching. His book has humor as shown in "Milking Milk Cows," "Going Shopping" and "Christmas Letter". It has a political turn in "A Nation That Cried Wolf" and "The Valley Green." "Weaning Time" and "Drought" express problems and ranch chores that tear at a cattlemans heart. "Miracle of Birth" and "My First Horse" bring forth a more tender side of country life. The reader gains a refreshing familiarty with a man whose spirit is country. Some of the writings will generate smiles and chuckles; others may trigger a tear or two. Readers should not be surprised if they find themselves reading some of the poems and stories over and over again.
