During the summer and fall of 1967, Staff Sergeant Mike Marowski USMC and Navy Hospitalman First Class Terry King were brothers-in-law and serving in the same Marine Battalion in northern I-Corps. Due to a shortage of company grade officers, Mike was appointed platoon commander in Delta Company 1/9 at Con Thien near the DMZ just shortly before Terry was assigned as senior Corpsman for Charlie Company, 1/9, refitting at Dong Ha. Both King and Marowski were experienced combat veterans and confident in their own abilities, but confidence and experience weren't always enough on the DMZ. First Battalion, Ninth Marines, was about to be tested in ways few Marines or Corpsmen have ever experienced. 1/9 was called the Walking Dead, and with good reason.
