Australians Penny and Bill Farrant travelled to Japan in the heart of the Japanese winter of 1991-1992 to visit friends in Sapporo. They travelled around the main four islands for five weeks and fell in love with Japan. After returning to Australia, they vowed to return, after they retired, to spend a whole year exploring the country further and seeing it in all seasons. Perth-based author Penny Farrant and her husband Bill have visited Japan three times - for five weeks in 1991-1992, for a year in 2016-2017, and for three months in 2018 - and they intend to return again. As seniors on a limited budget, and despite Bill having coeliac disease, their year in Japan was very rewarding as they met many of the locals, learnt about Japanese culture, sampled a range of interesting and delicious foods, and enjoyed a wealth of remarkable and exciting experiences.

Penny's accompanying book Gluten-Free Travel in Japan is rich with food photos and describes how Bill, having been diagnosed with coeliac disease in his 50s, faced the additional challenge of having to avoid foods containing wheat, barley, rye and oats. Penny's weekly emails to friends during their year away, with photos and descriptions of their experiences, form the basis of both books.

Dr Penny (Penelope) Farrant has degrees in architecture and marine biology and is particularly interested in the art-science interface. Her interests include art and calligraphy, swimming, bushwalking, and travel.
