The path that led to Trey "Bucky" Irving III's rise to stardom in collegiate football started in the Minneapolis suburbs. Irving, who was raised in Cottage Grove, honed his unique sprinting style at Park High School, where, despite his small stature of 5'10", his vision and elusiveness made him a four-star recruit. At first, Irving remained at home, committing in 2021 to the University of Minnesota. He only had 41 carries for 209 yards in eight games during his rookie season with the Golden Gophers as he adapted to Big Ten competition. In 2022, Irving transferred to Oregon in search of a system that would better highlight his skills. In his first season as a Duck, he added 31 receptions for 299 yards and ran for 1,058 yards on 156 carries (6.8 yards per attempt), demonstrating how the switch changed his life. With impressive performances versus USC (155 running yards) and Colorado (149 rushing yards, two touchdowns) in the 2023 season, Irving greatly improved his game. He became one of college football's best running backs thanks to his exceptional vision, contact balance, and enhanced pass-catching skills. Together with quarterback Bo Nix, Irving established himself as a key member of Oregon's potent attack, converting ordinary plays into spectacular gains and attracting the interest of NFL scouts from all over the country.
