Pendergraft paints this eathly love-hate relationship with the scrappiest of brushes, delivering a town-full of eccentrics and kindly folk who discover that they can do the most good by living their deepest instincts and impulses.--Publishers Weekly.
This book has a lot of the funniest and saddest people one could ever desire for a good reading. The story revolves around children in a school of days gone by where the school teacher isconstantantly at his wits end over the antics of the children. But there is more. A sister and brother have to make a long trecherous drive up to Brushy Mountain in the darkness and rain to help a woman who is stranded and about to have a baby. This is a heroic deed on their part and when they arrive twins are born, one dead. they bury the baby and come out of the whole sad situation stronger and having experienced too much for young children. I would recommend this book to adults as well as children for it teaches a lesson of endurance and hope in a world of turmoil.
