Just great!

Judging from the summary on the back cover I didn't expect more than an average novel like most of the Prelude series. Then I started reading... Boy, was I wrong! The relationship of the twins is really in best Weis/Hickman style, the characters are convincing, and the story leaves you a long time wondering: What's really going on in Mereklar? Who are the bad guys here? There's something about Shavas but Bast doesn't seem to fit the descricption of "good guy", either. Also, I loved the portrayal of Raistlin's vague memories of this deal with Fistandantilus, coming back in some airy dream that he can't recall in the morning. The only thing I found a bit unnecessary were the occasional trips into modern literature which could have been avoided. But since they don't interfere much with the storyline I think it's okay. A REALLY good book and a must read for every fan of the twins!

What a duo!

I have especially enjoyed books written about Raistlin and Caramon. Although this book was not written by Tracy Hickman and/or Margaret Weiss, this book was written about two important characters in the Dragonlance Saga. This book tells an interesting story about the Majere twins as they're growing up; how Caramon learns the do's and don'ts of mercenary work, and Raistlin begins to grow more and more powerful in his magic. In this book, they begin learning how to combine magic and steel to overcome they're enemies and protect each other. To all Majere fans, I recommend reading this book, if not purchasing it to add to your collection - I don't regret buying it!

Mysterious, and yet still DL

Brothers Majere mixes the right amount of mystery into the mix with DL, something as of yet (if your following in order) to be done. Sure it doesn't have hordes of goblins, or dragons, but let's see... there's a demi-god, evil demons, prophecies that have to be figured out, and in general a great mix of action. This book can explain a lot more about Raistlin and Caramon's relationship... and give a new outlook to the younger Raistlin. Earwig Lockpicker is your typical kender, bringing in the comedy relief. A great buy and a great read!

One of the better non-Weis/Hickman books in the series.

A good addition to the twins' history. Stein portrays Caramon and Raistlin wonderfully, (though not as good as Weis and Hickman, but hey..), and the mystery of the story is intriguing. Also interesting is the building tension between the brothers, and evidence of the jealousy and differences that will eventually tear them apart. Stein is faithful to the original characters, though the book is more like a Sherlock Holmes adventure.

Creative and Unique

In the dark years before the War of the Lance, the story of the brothers Majere, being the young warrior, Caramon, and his magic-using twin, Raistlin, is told. After Raistlin's magical test, Caramon and Raistlin need a job. So they sell out their abilities to a town in order to find the missing cats. As the two brothers search, their paths become danger-filled and mysterious, finally pulling together into a intriging ending.
