Brooklyn's pulse thrummed as the glowing speck glided down the hallway, leading her straight outside. Max bounded ahead, nails clicking on the wooden porch. Cooper, forever the steady guardian, stayed close, tail wagging in a mixture of curiosity and caution. Outside, the morning sunlight seemed brighter than usual, almost as if welcoming a new adventure. The speck darted over the flowerbeds, dancing among bright pink blooms before pausing at a knotty gate that Brooklyn rarely bothered with. She'd always imagined that gate might lead somewhere secret--but in all her games, it never actually did. Now, though, she saw faint sparkles on the latch. Max sniffed it, beard quivering in excitement, and Cooper tilted his head, letting out a small whine. With a tremor of anticipation, Brooklyn lifted the latch. The gate swung open, revealing a swirl of soft, pastel lights that didn't match anything in ordinary Brightwood. She gulped, heart fluttering with a mix of nerves and delight. Max barked, dashing through without a second thought, and Cooper followed with a wagging tail. Brooklyn took a breath--this could be silly daydreaming or something truly magical. And yet, that glittering swirl beyond the gate felt as real as the grass beneath her feet. Summoning her courage, she stepped through. In an instant, the hush of the backyard melted away, replaced by a gentle swirl of color. The air smelled of moss and lilacs. Brooklyn blinked, adjusting to a soft glow that seemed to come from every leaf. Max spun in a happy circle, barking at an unfamiliar bush, while Cooper pressed against Brooklyn's leg. Before them stretched a winding path under tall, shimmering trees, every branch laced with tiny lights. The speck that guided them hovered in midair, then zipped onward, as if beckoning them deeper. Brooklyn couldn't resist. Excitement flipped inside her belly. "Come on, guys," she whispered. "Let's find out where this leads."
