I read this book in 2005 when it was first published. I wrote to the author to tell him that I had been a member of the community at Saint Joseph's Abbey from 1963-1968, although at the time I knew very little about what this book concerns. I did feel that my opinions of the main "villains" in this work were not at all fairly represented. That seemed especially true of Frs.Thomas, Basil and Raphael. I have to admit my first reading was rapid and incomplete. I have just finished my second read and this time I was devastated to remember many more signs that something big was going on involving the Abbey and one of its monks named Brother Leo. In light of the present crisis in the hierarchy and priesthood of the Catholic Church, the battle between security and insecurity, obedience and conscience, keeping silent and vocal protest, tradition and relevance, Peter Grace and Margie Grace, is the core of this story. I feel I learned more about myself and what kind of a Catholic I am called to be, than about Leo and the crucifixion he endured at the hands of hierarchy, superiors and powerful men. Mr. Boykin has done an admirable job but it took me two close readings to begin to appreciate it and its message.
