Engaging, Personal View Into a Political Nightmare
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Publishers Weekly criticized the author for filtering the political story through his personal life, but I disagree with them heartily. By coming to care about and understand Kwan, I was able to place myself in his story in his position...which is really what I think his book was all about. If you want a universal view of what happened at Tiananmen Square, you should find a different book. If you want to know what it feels like being half insider, half outsider in a dangerously charged position; being intimately emotionally connected with a group of young adults who placed themselves in the line of guns and tanks to fight for...for something...this is really the book to read. It left me wanting to know more, both about the situation and about the man who shared his perceptions.
