Chicago, summer of 1945. Jack Broderick has just returned from the New Mexico desert where he was "treated" to an up close demonstration of a United States nuclear test. As he scours the seedy streets of Chicago, Jack must confront the people and events from his past, trying desperately to come to terms with a life of crime and violence. Mona, Jack's steamy love interest and world class dame, could care less whether he lives or dies. Nicky, Jack's double crossing best friend and partner in crime, has become wealthy and well placed in "The Organization" since Jack's "accident". And Vincent, Mona's ex-fiancee and the first man that Jack ever killed, haunts Jack's memories and actions in the last months of his life.
