Britain's Top 25 Castles

There are a lot of castles in Britain, and I have visited many of them, but I wanted to know whether I had seen all the best examples. It is always a subjective view of which are the best examples but as I sought advice, I was surprised that there were so many opinions and no definitive list.

Various organisations such as the National Trust or English Heritage oversee many excellent properties but tend to promote their best offerings within their portfolio rather than offer a broad view across the whole nation's potential candidates.

I set out on a mission to tour the country and visit as many castles as I could. I had to select from a large number of candidates which were favourites, which were runners up and which might be a great place to visit but would not make the grade.
