Bringing Religious Literacy to the Classroom: Global Competence for K-12 Social Studies

By Tim Hall

This is a practical guide for integrating religious literacy education (RLE) through global competence into K-12 social studies classrooms, providing more effective and actionable frameworks for implementing RLE across all grade levels.

Grounded in contemporary research, the book draws on cultural studies, the "3Bs" framework (beliefs, behaviors, belonging), and the Inquiry Design Model (IDM) to assist teachers in actively engaging their students with lived religions defined as the ways in which ordinary people engage with religion in their daily lives. Rather than reducing religious traditions to doctrines, rituals, or institutions, the book helps educators incorporate lived religions into classroom instruction. Each chapter incorporates strategies for elementary and secondary educators, ensuring that classroom practices are constitutionally sound, age-appropriate, and inquiry-based. Additionally, the book highlights field-based learning opportunities, including classroom visits and site visits, and it offers guidance on incorporating media, including picture books, graphic novels, and movies, to enhance religious literacy.

With practical strategies and real-world examples, this book equips social studies educators to teach about religion in a manner that fosters empathy, respect, and critical thinking essential in today's rapidly evolving, globalized society.
