Brine & Bone

Reader’s Notes: *Series or Connected Books?* stand-alone *Point Of View:* Magdalena *Any Cursing Or Possibly Offensive Language?* there is one mention of a character cursing, but no words used on page *Romance?* Yes! Just kisses *Things To Know:* –it is mentioned that a character’s tongue had been cut out -it is mentioned that a character used blood magic Review: I’ve been putting off this book because the cover made me concerned that it might possibly being creepy (since it’s so dark colored & the font of the title). But now that I’ve read a couple of Kate Stradling’s books and wanted a quick mermaid or Little Mermaid book, I decided to give this book a try. It was such a sweet and fairly cozy retelling of the Little Mermaid! (Minus the torture our Little Mermaid character had/was going through.) It was different from the typical retellings of the tale, but for me that made it even more interesting and fun to read! I enjoyed the magic/powers Magdalena had and how it came into play during the story. I loved Prince Finnian and his habit of trying to escape his guard to spend alone time with Magdalena. I also loved that Finnian knew how to circumvent his parents’ decrees to get the outcome he wanted without their backlash and gladly employed the tactic. Summary: Magdalena loved her childhood friend, the crown prince of Corenden, but did anything but admit it. Instead she left the court to learn how to manage her empathy magic at the sage seminary. But when the prince is unexpectedly lost at sea, Magdalena grieves the hardest between her own grief and the grief of her peers. Until one day, Magdalena happens upon Prince Finnian washed ashore. Overjoyed at his return and the part she played in his rescue, the royals pull Magdalena back to court as thanks. If only she had the choice, Magdalena wouldn’t have chosen to return for any number of reasons. But when a royal decrees something, no one can refute the command. But upon returning to the court, Magdalena discovers a new issue that she doesn’t know how to combat. With their return came the eerie creature that saved Prince Finnian from the depths, but the creature is intent on reclaiming him by any means necessary. Even enduring endless pain…
