ISBN 0399612092 - Well, I have to say I'm surprised by this one. It will, obviously, conflict with certain Christian ideas about creation - it begins with the Big Bang - but it seems possible that the Scientology freaks will like it... If you're normal, however, this is a nice, easy to read introduction to the science of the creation of the universe, what's happening now and what could happen in the future. The book actually starts with a science fiction story about the very distant future, during and after the death of the sun. From there, it is non-fiction, but like all good science books, there is sometimes more than one theory about things and those are presented. The book includes photos (black and white) and some illustrations, as well as a glossary and index. Dry reading would be a good term here; science can be like that. It was published in 1983 and I'm no expert about the advances made in this research, so I can't say what portion, if any (and I assume there is some), has become outdated. Still, it seems to me to be a good starting point for study or a school report. It is aimed at children, probably in the 9 to 12 age group. Author Melvin Berger manages to write in a way that doesn't really overwhelm, which is good - this is a lot of information! At times, the language was over my head, but the glossary bailed me out. This isn't a stellar (ha ha) book, in any "great story" way, but it's educational and fairly concise, well-suited for classroom and homeschool use. - AnnaLovesBooks
