With wit, charm and insight, Dr. Shouhua Qi admirably meshes personal anecdotes and political commentary in his new book, "Bridging the Pacific: Searching for Cross-Cultural Understanding Between the United States and China."On a cold day in January 1989, Qi arrived at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport with a $100 bill in his pocket and a goal of pursuing a doctoral degree in English at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, IL. A spirited and accomplished writer, Qi describes his everyday life experiences which take on new dimensions and challenges: of living in a basement apartment; of walking to the grocery store on a busy street without sidewalks; of working part-time jobs; of getting his driver's license and undergoing the ultimate rite of passage-driving 70 mph on Interstate 55 to Chicago; of buying and sustaining his first car; of bringing his wife and young son to America; and of settling into his new life in the years since. In essays exploring Sino-American relations, Dr. Qi writes that China, the largest developing nation in the world, is at a crucial stage in its history. While the country needs to broaden its citizen rights and adopt a more democratic system to realize its potential, the reforms must be tailored to Chinese culture and philosophy and occur in an orderly fashion to prevent chaos.Lighthearted and serious, entertaining and thought-provoking, "Bridging the Pacific" focuses on the need to recognize cross-cultural similarities while overcoming ideological differences.

Fantastic book! I was so enlightened by the author's insights into complexities in US/China relations and cultural differences and so delighted by his enormous sense of humor. I particularly enjoyed his take on big issues from personal angles (Oh, those delicious anecdotes!) and his giving things surprisingly illuminating twists at most unexpected juncutres. The book is a MUST for anyone who is interested in China, cross-cultural understanding, and US/China relations.
