THE LEGEND OF THE FIRST BRIDGE
Before the cities had names, before the waters had borders, there was only the land and the people who walked it. They moved freely-from mountain to shore, from forest to field-carrying with them the things that communities need to survive: food and medicine, stories and songs, the knowledge of how to heal a wound, how to calm a child, how to read the weather in the bones of the earth.
But the land was not one piece. It was divided by rivers and ravines, by canyons so deep the bottom was darkness and straits so wide the far shore was a rumor. The people needed to cross, and so they built bridges-not with steel or stone, but with intention. They walked to the edge of the impossible gap and they kept walking. And the earth, recognizing their purpose, rose to meet their feet.
These were the first Bridge Walkers. They were not magicians. They were workers-people whose labor was so essential, whose purpose was so clear, that the world itself made a path for them. They carried goods and medicine across the bridges. They carried news and warnings. They carried the old to the healers and the young to the teachers. They were the circulatory system of a world that could not survive without connection.
The bridges were alive. They remembered every footstep, every burden, every prayer whispered during a crossing. They grew stronger with use and weaker with neglect. They could not be owned. They could not be bought. They belonged to everyone, which meant they belonged to no one, which meant they were the most valuable things in the world.
This is the story of what happened when someone tried to put a lock on a bridge.
