The Breitung family was both prominent and newsworthy over a significant period of time in American history. This began with Edward Breitung Sr.'s arrival in America in 1849. Edward's descendants and related family members would continue in the prominent and newsworthy vein at least until two deaths occurring in 1923 and 1924, respectively, thus spanning a period of 75 years. The family was rich, famous, and active in politics. There does seem to be an erroneous tendency to equate power, politics and riches to heroism. One definition of a hero is a person who has had outstanding achievements, and in that regard, the Breitung family certainly qualifies. But other definitions of heroes include those showing courage, or having noble qualities. As will be seen in this book, the Breitung family was truly exceptional in many ways; however, this was in both positive and negative senses. They were often quite infamous, and scandalous.
