Lois Read, retired teacher of Art and Art History from Hopkins School, fell in love with words early, listening to her Grandmother recite poetry as they did the dinner dishes, later reciting it herself in "elocution class." She can't remember not loving color. For more than thirty years she painted the landscapes in New England, the south of France, Greece, and Mexico, reveling in color and light. The poems in Breathing Color bring words and colors together in ways that reveal Read's lifetime of observing and responding to everyday events, and hint at the transcendental import of light.
