Prince Edwin is the sole heir to the throne of Scotland exiled by his father King Dundin as part of a peace treaty with Queen Richie of England following a poorly fought war. He is compelled by law into the custody of the Queen and her evil advisor Lord Windigo. Edwin travels south with his tutor Lord Thomas, his master of arms, Sir Kurtis and his squire William. Leaving his homeland the young man Edwin is forbidden from returning until reaching the age of majority. Stuck at court he becomes a conspirator in a plot to create a plague. Edwin must protect himself from priests, knights and witches as he travels through England, France, and Italy. The religious beliefs of Edwin and his friends are tested, as they are tempted in medieval Europe, surrounded by groundbreaking science and old fashioned superstitious beliefs. Nights in Brasil feel like daydreams.
