Accused of a bank robbery and shooting he didn't commit, he jumps out a courthouse window, steals a horse and temporarily eludes pursuers with an elaborate disguise. The escape follows the appearance at his trial of Miss Ellinor Hoffman, whose testimony could clear him, at the risk of her good reputation. While in hiding, Jeff communicates with his friends using "the little eohippus" (an early ancestor of the horse) a carved dinosaur charm, to identify true friends. In typical Rhodes fashion, Bransford's honor almost gets him hanged, while his competitor for Ellinor's attention holds the trump card.
