Dark and beautiful

One look at the cover and you know it's not going to be the usual bland witty poetry you're accustomed to. A torrent of anger and despair unleashed ever so gracefully yet as blunt as a blow to the head. Loved Mortificare were your average poets are villified for producing soulless vanilla nonsense in their comfortable expensive homes using rhyming dictionaries. Ironically her publisher Mr. Rollins also hates anyone referring to themselves as poets as it conjures up a beret wearing, stripped shirt hack who sips cappuccino and hangs out in coffeehouses. Coincidentally I was never comfortable calling myself a poet for the same reasons so I refer to myself as an "aspiring writer".

some of the best poetry and prose you'll ever read

I couldn't believe how good it was, and immediately forced my girlfriend to read it. She was floored, too. Why isn't Warden more well-known? ....I mean, she definitely has a following, but this beats ALL.

Brainlift features strong words and dark sentiments.

The two most striking things about this book are Tricia Warden's ability to make darkness personal without being trite, and her adeptness with a phrase. Her invention of new words and twisting of idioms add so much to her poems; the sarcasm is delicious. This is not a book of greeting-card poetry, so expect much despair and anger; however, prepare to relish it, because the author makes the ugly very interesting. A few of the poems can start to seem a bit drawn-out if read superficially but the more you pay attention, the more you see; it's not light reading. Warden's poetry is not only smart but clever--it's worded thoughtfully as well as being thoughtful poetry. One of my favorites was "in response to being dumped for a 2 bit junkie poet," a sardonic and tightly-packed attack. Other highlights include some of the shorter poems such as "information,"--their power comes from their brevity and Warden's pointed phrases. This is strong stuff.
