The Boundary Project introduces a structured, integrated, family-focused model foraddressing sexual behavior problems in young children ages 4 through 12. This bookletwas developed by Dr. Eliana Gil, and has been adapted over the past thirty years fromdirect work with young children with sexual behavior problems, and the incorporation ofresearch and work from several esteemed colleagues in this field. Rooted in currentresearch treatment components that are effective in the short-term (reducing high-riskbehaviors and attending to safety/supervision) as well as long-term recovery from thetrauma, event, or familial circumstance that led to the child's behavior, this treatmentprovides an evidence-informed and family-focused framework for children ages 4 to 12years who present with sexual behavior problems. This is an attachment-focused,integrative approach that includes attention to safety issues, supervision concerns, individual risk factors, trauma histories, and familial factors that may underlie the atypicalor problematic sexual behaviors. The Boundary Project has intentional integration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT) along with expressive therapies, mindfulness meditation and embodied playmovement, and psychoeducation. In particular, expressive therapies including play, sand, and art are woven into the Boundary Project to enhance the potential to elicit interest, educate, and provide opportunities for reflection and introspection (which can lead toinsight and behavioral change). Expressive therapy techniques are particularly useful forchildren who have experienced trauma, those who may have great anxiety aboutdiscussing the topic, or those who may need time to develop a sense of safety that willdecrease defensive mechanisms. The cornerstone of the Boundary Project is the family-focused approach with collateralgroups for children and their parents/caregivers. Attachment-focused activities are builtinto each conjoint parent/caregiver-child session to repair or strengthen relationships thatmay have been strained, and affect regulation and impulse control strategies are presentedand practiced with children and their parent/s and/or caregiver/s.
