At the dawn of the 18th century, the feisty, independent minded Irish were still
suffering from the late Henry VIII's Ulster Plantation Program. Belfast had been
virtually cleared of native Irish families. The city center, once occupied by hundreds of store keepers and shop owners were deserted, nearly barren of life. Ulster Irish families had been removed from their farms, and replaced with southern English substituted planters.

Belfast import buildings were boarded shut down in an attempt by their owners to
save them for better times. Better times never happened. Bad times in Belfast outlived them all.
