Borrowed Time: A Bookshop on Main Novel
Some books you finish. Some books finish you.
Wren Cafferty flies home to Ashby with a numbered list, a rental car, and a return flight she has every intention of catching. Two weeks to close up her mother's house, that is the whole plan. She is a children's-book editor who has spent eleven years fixing the world with a red pen. Sam Hollis is the town librarian who loses his phone hourly, keeps a large orange cat named Hemingway on staff, and runs a Tuesday reading hour for six small children, a program that began, years ago, in the basement of her mother's house.
The house still smells of cinnamon. The porch light still comes on for no one. And somewhere on the shelves waits a childhood book with Edith's handwriting crowding the margins, a page she meant to come back to and never finished. Borrowed Time is a cozy small-town Christmas romance about a daughter who came to settle an estate and catch a flight, and did not plan on a man who keeps other people's bookmarks, a town that assumes she is staying, or the particular danger of sitting at a kitchen table after dark. Two weeks was supposed to be exactly enough time to leave. It turns out to be exactly enough time to be read.
Tropes: small-town Christmas, a homecoming, a returning daughter, a warm-hearted librarian, and a mother's last words in the margins. Closed-door, dual POV, with a guaranteed happy ending.
Book 8 in The Bookshop on Main series. Can be read as a standalone.
