Born in 1935, Author tells about her life in Alabama & Georgia

Would make a great movie! Born in 1935 she tells of growing up in pre-civil rights segregation days in her native Alabama and Georgia. Counted African-American, yet turns out she has white ancestors too. In Selma, Alabama had her own personal bus boycott after an bad experience on the bus. She sees the KKK riding through her neighborhood hearing the threats. She tells of separate restrooms, restaurants, theatres, and water fountains. Her Mom a teacher and her Dad a Principal at all black Monitor High School in Fitzgerald, Georgia where she graduated high school. She still enjoys her life immensely and goes to Spellman College becomes a teacher then marries and finds success teaching in Groton, Connecticut and Chicago, Illinois. In retrospect revisits her roots in the South. A worthy book for all ages. We need heroes, here's one. A+

A Unique Perspective

Melds the perspectives of a small-town southern child, a highly educated professional, and an urban educator in a fascinating story of pre-Civil Rights Movement Southern life.

Historical Gem!

Erin Mitchell perfectly captures the spirit of growing up in a segregated south. Her story mirrors the lives of countless others who survived blatant bigotry - yet portrays a happy and fruitful "childhood into adulthood." Readers will enjoy the wonderful stories that Mrs. Mitchell spins. I recommend this book without reservations! Mary Frances Early
