Soon after Jim and Judy Merrill moved into their house in Maine, they discovered a pile of dirt next to the house, possibly the construction of a small animal? Neighbors were suspicious of groundhog or woodchuck activity. "They are a nuisance. You don't want them in your yard," shouted the neighbors. It was not until June that the groundhog they named Boris made a brief appearance. Knowing very little about groundhogs' underground living arrangements and how they hibernated from October to early spring without food, Jim and Judy found this amazing. What were their den houses like? What did they eat? Veggies, bark, flowers, carrottops, and corn.
