Maria comes from a poor Mexican family that hoped to someday be able to save enough money to legally move to the U.S. Drought and inflation have eaten up all the family's savings and their hope. Her young 13-year-old brother makes a deal with a nefarious smuggler for "safe" passage to the U.S. The boy only wants to help his family by getting a job to send money back home. Maria becomes very worried about him getting arrested or harmed. She goes to find him and encounters the Border Patrol, an underground smuggling operation, the mafia, and more.
