Great Boomer Insights!

I loved this book! The author presents a compelling story of a mid-life crisis based on the main characterer's questioning of his life path -- was he right to leave his music dreams behind and go into corporate advertising? Is it too late to pursue his dream of being a full time musician playing zydeco music in New Orleans? The questions raised by the book will reverberate in all boomers: were we right to choose the responsible path and is it too late to go back and make one more try at the dream of our youth? Mr. Cain's story of Boomer (a nickname that makes sense when you read the story!) and his friend Sid and son Jason and girlfriend Jackie and ex-wife Susan is a fun read that will have you sitting back and thinking about your own life choices. I particularly enjoyed reading about Boomer and Susan's relationship post-divorce. All divorces should go so well for the sake of the kids involved! It's a fun, insightful read - go ahead, you'll enjoy it!

Boomer at Midlife is an original novel about Walter "Boomer" Stapleton, the quintessential baby boomer: divorced, middle-aged, tired of his job, in a relationship with a woman much younger than he is. His only child is about to attend college. As his fiftieth birthday draws ever nearer, Boomer yearns to break away from the stereotypes of his generation and radically reinvent himself. Quitting his job, he moves to New Orleans to pursue his dreams, playing zydeco on his accordion. But what awaits him in The Big Easy will pull him even further into his mire of uncertainty about who he is and where his place in life is. At times irreverent, at times soulful, Boomer at Midlife is at its core an engaging parable about the human condition.

Midlife for all ages

Regardless of your age, you will enjoy reading Boomer at Midlife. If you are a boomer, the imagery of life in the late fifties and early sixties will be a walk down memory lane. If you are the child of a boomer, you may realize what makes your father tick, and why he is the way he is. The story concerns the mid-life crisis of "Boomer" Stapleton, an executive at a major corporation in Cincinnati. But his life takes a change after he turns fifty and pursues his dream of becoming a professional zydeco accordionist. I was so caught up in finding out what drove Boomer's desire and what unfolded as he made the quantum leap to New Orleans that I could not stop reading after I reached the middle of the book. Boomer at Midlife is a funny, poignant, tragic, and hopeful story about human nature and how history and place define who you are.
