A Magical and Wiccan Compendium

Lady Sara's book, The Book of Light, was originally published in 1974, and then republished here by Magickal Childe in 1990. It is an excellent resource for the foundations of Wiccan work, such as herbal and flowers and how to use them in ritual context. The chapters are concise and to the point and are lavishly designed with wonderful drawings on every page. The book is bigger than an average size trade paperback. Some of these lists of herbs, aromas, flowers, minerals, etc., are quite extensive as well. A large section is also given for candle magic which you utilize various colors and placements within the room that designs a particular vibrational effect. The she enters more in the arena of ritual work describing Pentagram and Hexagram rituals (these are not the traditional OTO or GD versions), but may have a similar intent. There are also brief references of Kabbalah and Tree of Life which can be used in meditative exercises (ala the Middle Pillar Ritual). Later in the book she moves into using astrology, sigils and talismans. The text is designed as a means to build your knowledge with experience and not just a read-through. It is primarily a source of reference, but also that you integrate the knowledge with the practices offered. As you will see in the book, she takes many of the notations from the herbal and candle and eventually brings them into the rituals that prove more effective in select times and places. An easy read for anyone that is practiced in some of these arts, and certainly knowledgeable of herbs, etc. But there is always work attached to it and just knowing does not prove anything. An experienced reader/practitioner might not find too much new here and may even feel its all re-written to some degree. While I too lean towards the Crowlean slant of Magick, I do find it useful to discover new ways of doing things regardless of how the author came to their own discoveries.
