A Novel of the Law describing the descent of a lawyer who represents big, nasty law firms and a famous dictator into deep trouble after an employee embroils his firm in a data theft. This description may be from another edition of this product.
An odd title to anyone but attorneys in certain practices, but legal thrillers often use a piece of jargon and John Grisham had already taken "The Client". A friend had recommended it. I browsed the first couple of chapters and was hooked, racing through it in a couple of days. The book of business refers to the stable of clients an individual attorney or law firm would have, often the only asset of value beyond the attorney's own reputation. In this thriller the book has two clients forming the core story; neither is admirable or sympathetic. In fact, the very mention of one client's name generally produces total terror in any who fear they might be considered to have crossed him. The source of that terror motivates the core plot and the near death spiral conclusion. By the time this book ends virtually everyone has become a client as they struggle for survival. The book is written in a tight episodic style reminiscent of "The Da Vinci Code" and you can almost see the ease with which this could come to the big or small screen (an HBO mini-series???). It's a gripping story of what motivates attorneys, what risks they are willing to take, including representing the most reprehensible characters (and we're not talking ACLU free speech cases here), and the consequences. With few exceptions there are no heroes in this story, but that's fine. It's a tight, focused, exciting read. I'll be looking for the author's next book.
Debut Legal Thriller a Tour-de-Force for Will Nathan
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Will Nathan's debut legal thriller stands the genre on its head. As this cracking good yarn begins, uber-litigator Augustus Bondoc endures a humiliating courtroom defeat (he is likened to Jabba the Hut on national television) like a snake shedding its skin. Maneuvering to avenge himself and save his book of business, or coterie of clients, Bondoc is drawn deeper and deeper into a professional swamp fed by a lifetime of depravity. His mistress, an attractive Haitian employed by his law firm, manages to crack the firm's computer security and lift millions of dollars belonging to one of Bondoc's treasured clients, the notorious Baby Doc Duvalier. Needless to say, Baby Doc is not amused, and soon dead bodies begin piling up closer and closer to Bondoc. In this coast-to-coast page turner, Nathan's native New York and his adopted hometown of San Francisco are overrun by lawyers on the lower end of the moral spectrum. No stranger to the street, Nathan brings a chilling clarity to his descriptions of the underside of Fun City, yet he is equally at home in the posh clubs on Nob Hill, backwater courtrooms, and the not-so-hallowed halls of academe. Book of Business is a tour-de-force for Will Nathan, and readers can only hope for more. Thomas Farrell Author of Skylord

I could not put the book down, knowing that on the next page some lawyer or client was going to be upended. If you hate lawyers, as I do and I'm one of them, this is a book for you.
