This is still the best book available on the unparalleled spiritual friendship between two amazing saints: Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. Wendy Wright, the best scholar on Salesian spirituality writing in English, chronicles the period of Jane's life from the time she was a young widow drawn to the intimate spiritual direction of Francis, through the development of the Order of the Visitation, until Jane's death in 1641. Her book places this precious friendship in the context of the little known Christian tradition of male/female spiritual friendships, a tradition which spans the centuries. Highly recommended, especially as a companion volume to Wright's book on Salesian spirituality (Heart Speaks to Heart).
